A major milestone has been reached in the long-awaited rehabilitation of Eldoret’s 64-Stadium.
In a joint effort to break years of stagnation, Uasin Gishu County Deputy Governor Kapkea Evans on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, officially handed over project documents to the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) technical team to assess the remaining scope of work required for completion.
The initiative marks the formal commencement of the next phase of the project, signalling a renewed commitment to delivering a world-class facility that will serve as a training ground for elite athletes and a venue for major sporting events.

The technical assessment was led by Lieutenant Colonel Purity W. Gitahu, heading the KDF engineering team. The handover of documents and the subsequent evaluation of the stadium’s current state laid the groundwork for the final construction stages.
In a Facebook post after the exercise, DG Kapkea emphasised that the move is critical for moving the project forward after years of delay.
“This exercise lays the foundation for the next phase of works and reaffirms our determination to see this project completed after years of delay. Our administration remains committed to working closely with all stakeholders to deliver a stadium that will nurture talent, host major sporting events, and restore the pride of the County of Champions,” he said.
On his part, Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii described the move as a “decisive step” toward revitalising the facility. He highlighted the successful inter-governmental cooperation that made the intervention possible, specifically acknowledging the support of the National Government.
“We remain focused on delivering this project because our sportsmen and women deserve the right environment to nurture their talent, compete at the highest level, and inspire future generations,” Bii said.

Governor Bii specifically thanked President William Ruto for responding to his appeal and directing the intervention that has revived the project. He noted that this demonstrates the power of collaboration between national and county governments.
“The completion of the 64 Stadium is now firmly on course, and it will stand as a lasting symbol of opportunity, excellence, and the enduring spirit of the County of Champions,” Governor Bii said.
With the KDF team now on the ground assessing the final requirements, the timeline for the stadium’s reopening and full operationalisation is expected to become clearer in the coming weeks.

KDF has now officially taken over construction works at 64 Stadium.
