Remote medical coders face the heaviest screen strain, a July 2026 report found. A new study by the eyewear brand Overnight Glasses analysed screen exposure, visual precision, workload pressure, and wages across 34 online jobs to determine which roles put the most pressure on workers’ eyes while paying the least.
To measure the extent of screen strain each job creates, the study examined computer dependence, digital communication, sitting time, visual precision, information processing, and workload pressure.
Estimated daily screen time was also factored in. To find the burden relative to pay, each job’s screen‑strain score was divided by its median annual wage per $10K. Jobs with high screen strain and low wages score highest.

Online tutors and course creators come in second with a burden of 14.5. They spend 5.5 to 7 hours each day in front of screens, which is less than the coders, but their typical salary of $45K is the lowest among the top five. Their strain measurement comes to 66, which is still significant even if it stops short of critical. Given the modest pay and consistent daily exposure, they end up carrying nearly as much weight per dollar as the medical coders.

Health informatics specialists take third place with a burden of 11.9. Their screen time runs 7 to 8 hours daily, working through complex systems and large volumes of clinical information. Their strain reading comes to 80, firmly placing them in the high‑risk group. Annual earnings sit at $67K, which is better than the top two roles but still below what many tech positions offer. What drives their burden is the combination of intense focus and wages that don’t fully reflect the effort required.
- Social Media Manager
Social media managers rank fourth with a burden of 11.8. They put in 7 to 8 hours of screen time each day, moving between posts, audience interactions, and performance metrics. Their strain level measures 82, which is quite demanding. They earn roughly $69K a year, and the role requires constant visual attention and rapid communication. That blend of heavy screen exposure and moderate pay keeps them among the most taxing jobs in the study.
- Remote Recruiter / Talent Acquisition
Remote recruiters round out the top five with a burden of 11.1. They’re also on screens for 7 to 8 hours a day, handling video interviews, reviewing applications, and responding to candidates. Their strain registers at 81, just behind social media managers. They make about $72K annually, slightly more than their counterparts, though still not enough to offset the daily screen demands. For the amount of time they spend in front of a monitor, the compensation just doesn’t quite measure up.
