FKF Postpones Mashemeji Derby for Lack of Suitable Venue

The highly anticipated Mashemeji Derby will not be happening this weekend.

Initially scheduled for Sunday, May 11, 2025, the game has now been postponed until further notice.

According to the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) the decision was reached over unavailability of a suitable venue to host the game.

Kasarani was to host the game but the stadium, according to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), it remains unavailable due to preparations for the African Nations Championship (CHAN).

FKF could also not secure Ulinzi Complex to host the match after security concerns were raised.

CAF had further proposed that the fixture be moved to the Ulinzi Sports Complex and played behind closed doors to preserve CHAN infrastructure and maintain security standards. However, the venue declined to host the match, citing internal concerns around safety and the risk of vandalism,” the federation said in a statement on Friday, May 9, 2025.

With no suitable venue currently available, FKF has resolved to postpone the match to a later date, which will be communicated in due course,” it added

A match between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards remains one of the most anticipated on the Kenyan football calendar.

We regret the inconvenience this change may cause to supporters, clubs, and partners,” FKF said.
