The Catholic Diocese of Eldoret covers three North Rift Counties of Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet and Nandi.
Currently headed by Bishop Dominic Kimengich, the Diocese has a rich and fascinating history.
Establishment and Growth
On June 29, 1953, the diocese was founded as the Apostolic Prefecture of Eldoret, carved out from the Diocese of Kisumu.
Later, on October 13, 1959, it was elevated to a full-fledged Diocese of Eldoret.
The early days saw the tireless efforts of Father Joseph Brendan Houlihan, S.P.S., who served as the Prefect Apostolic of Eldoret during this transition period.
Eldoret Catholic Diocese Geographical Reach
The diocese’s influence extended far beyond Eldoret itself. It covered a vast expanse, stretching from Nairobi to the outskirts of Kampala, Uganda.

Encompassing the Rift Valley, Western Kenya, and the eastern half of Uganda, it played a pivotal role in shaping the spiritual landscape of the region.
