China Square Eldoret Opens: Governor Bii Hails Major Investment Milestone

Uasin Gishu County Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim officially cut the ribbon on the new China Square store in Eldoret City on Monday, August 3, 2026, marking the arrival of the popular retail chain in the Rift Valley’s third-largest city.

The Governor, who presided over the opening ceremony, described the launch as a transformative moment for the region.

Today’s opening of China Square in Eldoret City marks another significant milestone in our journey to position Eldoret as the preferred destination for investment, trade, and enterprise in the region,” Governor Chelilim stated to a crowd of investors, business owners, and residents.

He emphasised that the new store is more than just a retail outlet, calling it a “landmark investment” and a “strong vote of confidence in our county’s growing economy and the immense potential of our city.”

During his address, the Governor outlined his administration’s commitment to sustaining this momentum.

As an administration, we are focused on creating an enabling business environment through strategic investments in modern infrastructure, investor-friendly policies, and our smart County Service Centre,” he added, linking the store’s success to the county’s broader digital and infrastructural reforms.

The opening of the Eldoret branch follows the chain’s successful expansion across the country, with the new location expected to create hundreds of jobs and provide residents with access to a wider range of affordable goods.

China Square has established itself as a key player in Kenya’s retail sector, known for offering a wide variety of imported goods at competitive prices.

The first China Square branch in Kenya was opened in Nairobi in 2018, quickly gaining popularity in the Eastleigh and Westlands areas. As of August 2026, the chain operates 7 branches nationwide.

The Eldoret store, officially opened by Governor Chelilim on August 3, 2026, is the latest (7th) branch. It joins existing locations in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu, completing a strategic network covering Kenya’s major economic hubs.
