Eldoret Catholic’s St John Amani Centre Nearing Completion as ACK Plaza Stalls

A commercial building at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral compound in Eldoret City, which has been under construction for the last four years, is nearing completion.

The 8-storey building, already named St John Amani Centre, is set to give the Eldoret city skyline a new look.

A spot check by Uasin Gishu News reveals that the major construction works on the KSh 420 million project have been completed, with workers now installing windows and ongoing painting works.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the building was presided over by Bishop Dominic Kimengich in December 2021.

Why Catholic Church named its Eldoret commercial building St John Amani Centre

During the groundbreaking event, Bishop Kimengich said the building was named St Jonh to preserve the name of the old church, which was demolished to pave the way for the new structure.

In addition, Amani Centre was a result of the need to remind the Catholic faithful in the Diocese of the peace efforts that the late Bishop Cornelius Korir was involved in.

But as the St John Amani Centre is almost ready to be unveiled as the newest commercial centre in Eldoret, another building near it – ACK Plaza remains stalled.

A groundbreaking for the building, funded by the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK), was almost at the same time as the St John Amani Centre.

A visit to the site for the KSh 1 billion 6-floor commercial building shows no workers on site. Work has stopped for over two years now.

Less than half of the main structure is complete. The reason for the stall of the project adjacent to Central Primary School grounds remains unclear.
