The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a teacher at Friends School Kamusinga Boys High School in Bungoma County over allegations of soliciting and receiving bribes from unemployed teachers while claiming she could influence recruitment by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
The suspect, identified as Lilian Nelima Buluma, was arrested on October 12 following preliminary investigations into complaints that she demanded Ksh 100,000 from each of three unemployed teachers, allegedly promising to secure them employment with the TSC.
According to the anti-graft agency, the three victims were allegedly required to pay a total of Sh300,000 in exchange for the purported assistance.
Investigators say Buluma had already received Ksh 150,000 through M-Pesa as part of the alleged payments. She is said to have claimed she had connections within the TSC and other government offices that would enable her to facilitate the recruitment process.
Following her arrest, the suspect was processed at the EACC Western Regional Office before being booked at Bungoma Police Station, where she remains pending the completion of investigations.
The commission said the teacher is likely to face charges of requesting and receiving a bribe, contrary to Section 6 as read together with Section 18 of the Anti-Bribery Act, 2016.
In a statement, EACC reaffirmed its commitment to combating corruption and promoting integrity in public service, warning members of the public against paying money in exchange for government jobs or other public services.
