President William Ruto now says his ambitious affordable housing project is creating jobs across the country on a major scale.
Speaking after inspecting construction of the 380-unit Chepkorio Affordable Housing Project in Keiyo South Constituency, Elgeyo Marakwet County, on Thursday, October 15, 2026, Ruto said the initiative is currently creating over a million jobs.
He further expressed optimism that the programme will help eliminate slums and reduce land fragmentation in agricultural areas.
“The Affordable Housing Programme is creating jobs at a major scale – now at 1.1 million – and is expected to reduce land fragmentation in agriculturally productive areas, eliminate slums and promote well-planned settlements for better service delivery,” the president said.

The Head of State further revealed that his administration is currently constructing about 300,000 housing units. Affordable Housing is one of President William Ruto’s flagship projects.
“Our target is to build two million houses, 200,000 annually. We are on course, with 300,000 units already under construction across the country,” Ruto said.
How many affordable housing units are complete?
Official government figures show that as of September 2026, approximately 10,000 affordable housing units had been completed, with about 8,000 units fully occupied.
The remaining 2,000 completed units are undergoing final allocation protocols or minor infrastructural assessments as the government fine-tunes long-term financing and ownership models through the Boma Yangu Portal.

Some of the notable completed estates where families have moved in include:
- Mukuru Housing Estate (Nairobi): The largest share, delivering 5,616 completed units (primarily bedsitters and social housing categories).
- Disciplined Forces Housing: 792 units completed for security personnel.
- Bondeni Project (Nakuru): 605 units handed over.
- Buxton Project Phase 1 (Mombasa): 584 units completed.
- Milimani Estate Phase 1 (Kakamega): 220 units completed, with more than half already fully occupied and homeowners actively moving in.
- Homa Bay Estate: 110 units complete.
