It’s a new milestone for the Kapsabet County Referral Hospital (KCRH) after doctors successfully performed a first brain surgery.
The surgery also known as CRANIOTOMY was performed on a 67-year-old male patient from Kapkangani ward, Emgwen Sub County.
A statement from the County Government of Nandi indicates that the patient was presented to Kapsabet County Referral Hospital on 15th August 2023 with a one-day history of loss of consciousness.
He also had right-sided weakness and confusion after a throbbing global headache.
“He had no history of trauma and was done brain CT scan which showed left-sided massive acute on chronic subdural hematoma(a bleed into the brain),” the county noted, Thursday.
“Further, he underwent an emergency craniotomy to evacuate the accumulated blood,” it added.
Following the procedure, the patient was reversed successfully and later admitted to Post Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU) before being moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) overnight for monitoring.
“The Patient did well post-operatively, moved from ICU to the male surgical ward,” read part of a statement.
Currently, the patient is fully awake and oriented recuperating in the surgical ward and for daily reviews as well as close monitoring.
Surgical team
The participating Surgical team involved in the historical procedure included Judy Nyaberi (Perioperative Nurse), Cynthia Maritim (Perioperative nurse), Rael Rotich – (Theatre Nurse), Hudson Musundi (Anaesthetist), Dr Faith Ngeno (Medical officer intern), Dr Meshack Tum (medical officer intern), Dr Henry Koros (Medical officer) and Dr Shadrack Tanui, a general Surgeon.
“This successful specialized surgery demonstrates the need for continued investment in developing speciality surgical & medical skills, investments in medical infrastructure and specialized equipment with motivated Human Resources for the health workforce,” noted the County Government of Nandi which runs the facility.
