The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has warned motorists of major traffic congestion on key highways linking Nairobi to the Rift Valley and Western Kenya as holiday travel peaks across the country.
In a public advisory, the roads agency said traffic volumes had risen sharply on the Rironi–Nakuru–Mau Summit (A8) and Rironi–Mai Mahiu–Naivasha (A8 South) corridors, prompting enhanced traffic management measures.
KeNHA said it is coordinating with the National Police Service to keep vehicles moving but stressed that driver behavior will ultimately determine how smoothly traffic flows during the holiday rush.

“Cooperation and responsible conduct of all road users remain critical to ensuring safe and timely journeys,” the agency said.
The authority further cautioned motorists that discipline on the road will play a key role in preventing accidents and unnecessary gridlock during the busy travel period.
“Motorists travelling along these corridors are advised to exercise caution and strictly observe lane discipline to ensure smooth traffic flow and to prevent congestion and accidents,” it noted.
Alternative routes for Rironi–Nakuru–Mau Summit
To help ease congestion in case of traffic snarl-ups, KeNHA released a list of alternative routes, including Thika–Magumu–Njabini–Olkalou–Dundori–Lanet–Nakuru, Ngong–Suswa–Narok–Mau Narok–Nakuru, and Nakuru–Kampi ya Moto–Eldama Ravine–Makutano, among others.

The notice, signed by Ag. Director General Eng. Luka Kimeli, also conveyed seasonal goodwill to travelers as thousands head to their holiday destinations.
“KeNHA wishes all motorists safe travels and a happy festive season,” it said.
Road users have been encouraged to plan their journeys early, follow instructions from traffic officers on the ground, and use the suggested diversions where necessary to avoid long delays.
