KeNHA Orders Removal of Illegal Structures Along 3 Roads in Rift Valley and Western Kenya

The Kenya National Highways Authority has given roadside traders and developers 30 days to remove all unapproved structures from the road reserves of three roads in Rift Valley and Western Kenya, warning it will clear them at the owner’s cost after June 26, 2026.

In a public notice dated May 27, 2026, KeNHA directed operators to take down “makeshift structures, permanent and semi-permanent buildings, Billboards, Directional and Advertisement Signs, Tree Nursery Beds, and any other thing done without the consent of the Authority” within the reserves of both directions of the affected roads.

The notice applies to:
1. Chebarbar-Lessos-Nabkoi (B12)
2. Mayoni-Bungoma (B139)
3. Chepsonoi-Kapsabet (B12)

KeNHA said the directive covers encroachments on both the new and old alignment of the road reserves. All affected operators “are directed to remove all the said structures within 30 days from the Date of this Notice,” the authority stated.

The exercise is meant “to pave the way for the implementation of road reserve protection activities,” according to the notice signed by KeNHA Director General Eng. Luka Kimeli.

Upon the expiry of this notice, June 26, 2026, the Kenya National Highways Authority will remove all the said encroachments as mandated by Clause 49 of the Roads Act, 2007 without any further reference to the owners/operators, and where applicable, at the owner’s cost,” the notice read.

KeNHA urged the public and roadside traders to comply to avoid forced removal and additional costs.
