Kenya Handed Bye in First Round of 2028 LA Olympics Qualifiers

Harambee Starlets have been handed a bye in the first round of the African qualifiers for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

This follows the official draw conducted on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at the headquarters of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in Cairo.

The draw placed Kenya in Pot 4.

2028 Olympics Qualification format for women’s football

A total of 35 nations will take part in the African qualification series, which will be played over five rounds.

Only two teams will secure qualification to represent the continent at the women’s football tournament of the 2028 Summer Olympics, scheduled to take place from July 11 to July 29, 2028.

First Round Fixtures for Olympics Qualifiers

While Kenya will not feature in the opening round, the following matches have been scheduled:

  • Sudan vs Comoros
  • South Sudan vs Madagascar
  • Mauritius vs Djibouti

The first-round matches will be played between June 1 and June 9, 2026.

Olympics qualifiers second round: Kenya to face Seychelles

Harambee Starlets will enter the competition in the second round, where they are set to face Seychelles.

The other fixtures in this round are:

  2. South Sudan/Madagascar vs South Africa
  3. Mauritius/Djibouti vs Ghana
  4. Tunisia vs Senegal
  5. Benin vs Mali
  6. Congo vs Morocco
  7. Guinea vs Cameroon
  8. DR Congo vs Ivory Coast
  9. Central African Republic vs Algeria
  10. Burkina Faso vs Equatorial Guinea
  11. Rwanda vs Ethiopia
  12. Botswana vs Tanzania
  13. Angola vs Namibia
  14. Malawi vs Zimbabwe
  15. Uganda vs Zambia

Second round matches are scheduled to be played between October 5 and October 13, 2026.

Kenya’s road to Olympics Qualifiers final rounds

Should Kenya progress past Seychelles, they will advance to the third round, set for February 23 to March 6, 2027, where they will face either Malawi or Zimbabwe.

The fourth round, scheduled for October 4 to October 12, 2027, will see winners from the third round face off against opponents from parallel fixtures.

The qualification campaign will culminate in the fifth and final round, to be played between November 23 and December 4, 2027, where the remaining teams will compete for the two available slots at the Olympic Games.
