Kenya’s strategic partnership with China is set to deepen further following the ongoing visit by President William Ruto.
On Thursday, April 24, 2025, President Ruto, who is on a state visit to the Asian nation said the two countries had signed at least 20 trade agreements and Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs).
The agreements, the President said, will help promote various sectors of Kenya’s economy including education, health and agriculture.
“At the Great Hall of the People, Beijing, President Xi Jinping, and I witnessed the signing of 20 trade agreements and Memorandums of Understanding to promote various sectors of our economy, aligning with our Belt and Road Initiative cooperation,” Ruto said in a post on his verified social media pages.
“Our Chinese partners will invest significant resources to improve our road infrastructure, education, health, agriculture, blue economy, green energy, and ICT sectors, among others,” he added.
The head of state said the commitments from China are further evidence of their resolute support to Kenya’s efforts to grow the economy, create jobs for the youth and “unlock the untapped resources of our great nation.”
What did China and Kenya agree on diplomacy issues?
On diplomacy, Ruto said he had agreed with President Xi to continue promoting unity and cooperation among the Global South and enhancing its voice in international fora.
“We will also continue to champion for the strengthening and reformation of the UN systems, in particular the Security Council, to be more representative and responsive to the present realities,” he added.
According to President Ruto, Kenya-China strategic partnership is permanent, people-centered, and continues to deliver practical, tangible, impactful, and sustainable win-win situations.
He also said Kenya will strengthen co-operation with China to confront various challenges and push for a shared success.
“In particular, we will upgrade our infrastructure to promote connectivity, hence facilitate trade in Kenya and within the region,” Ruto noted.
