Kenyatta National Hospital Doctors Perform First Cochlear Implant Surgeries

Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeons at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in partnership with ENT surgeons from the Kingdom of Morocco have commenced a week-long Cochlear Implant Surgical Project.

The project that runs from 3rd – 7th November 2025, will see 50 children with hearing impairments benefit from life-transforming procedures, that will eventually restore their hearing.

So far, the medics have already operated on 8 patients in KNH main theatres, marking the very first Cochlear Implant Surgery in the hospital and by extension the Public Healthcare sector in Kenya.

This project is a major milestone for Kenya as it is poised to make KNH a Centre of Excellence in the treatment and management of hearing impairment in the region.

The project has been made possible through a collaboration between the First Lady of the Republic of Kenya, Mama Rachel Ruto and Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Asmaa of the Kingdom of Morocco who donated the Cochlear implant devices valued at over Ksh. 120 million.

For the young patients and their families, these surgeries mean far more than restored hearing — they symbolise renewed hope, connection, and the promise of a brighter, inclusive future,” said the Ministry of Health.
