MKU, Equip Africa Institute Committed to Nurturing Competent Graduates – Prof Jaganyi

Mount Kenya University (MKU) and Equip Africa Institute have affirmed their commitment to nurturing skilled and competent graduates.

This affirmation was made by MKU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi.

Speaking in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County during the third graduation of Equip Africa Insitute, Jaganyi said the two institutions are focused on equipping students with employable skills.

Our University prioritizes and invests heavily in skill-based training programmes. We recognise that transformative economic growth begins with individuals who not only possess theoretical understanding but also the technical competence to make a difference,” the MKU VC said.

He further called on students who wish to further their studies to consider technical courses.

According to Prof Jaganyi, the current job demand favours technical graduates.

It is noteworthy that we are witnessing a significant shift in education preferences. The recently concluded student placement exercise revealed a growing trend of students choosing skills-based training over the traditional university education,” he added.

In addition, he called on the graduands to explore growth opportunities and uphold the highest standards of ethics and commitment to serving the community.

Non-compliant TVETs warned

Addressing the graduands, Dr. Paul Wanyeki, the director in charge of standards development, compliance and enforcement at the Technical and Vocational Training Education Authority (TVETA) issued a warning to non-compliant TVET institutions that stern action will be taken against such learning institutions.

All institutions, whether public or private must adhere to the set guidelines and regulations. This adherence is not merely a compliance issue but a commitment to ensuring that learners are equipped with skills that match the needs of the industry and the society at large,” Wanyeki stated.

Meanwhile, Prof. Evans Kerosi, the Executive Director of the 6-year-old Equip Africa Institute urged the 219 graduands to use their acquired skills to transform the society they live in.

You now stand equipped with skills and knowledge, we urge you to use these to unlock your full potential. Remember to give back to your parents, guardians and the communities that have supported you along the way,” Kerosi urged.

On his part, Trans Nzoia County Executive Committee Member in charge of Environment, Water, Natural Resources and Climate Change, Bonface Wanyonyi urged the graduands to use their skills to create employment.

You have been trained not to be job seekers but rather job creators. There are very many opportunities both locally and even abroad. Grab those opportunities and let us build our county and country together,” Wanyonyi appealed.

The colourful event was attended by thousands of family members and friends of the graduands from across the country.
