Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) has conducted 16 successful Duhamel pull-through surgeries.
The surgeries were conducted under the Pediatric Pull-Through Surgery Project.
They were carried out from November 3rd to 7th, 2025, at Shoe4Africa Children’s Hospital.
The initiative aimed at providing specialized treatment for children suffering from Hirschsprung’s disease.
This is a rare congenital birth defect that affects the large intestine, making it difficult for the body to pass stool normally, and often requires expert surgical care to manage effectively.
The surgical mission was led by Dr. Peter Saula, Consultant Pediatric Surgeon at MTRH, supported by a multidisciplinary team of anaesthetists, theatre nurses, pediatric specialists, and post-operative care staff.
Speaking shortly after the final procedure, Dr. Saula highlighted the significance of the project in expanding access to advanced pediatric surgical care in the region.
“This program has given sixteen (16) children a chance of healthier, pain-free lives. The success of these surgeries reflects the strength of our team and the commitment of MTRH to improving specialized child health services,” he said.
MTRH Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Philip Kirwa noted that the week-long campaign is part of a broader effort to increase the availability of complex pediatric surgeries within Kenya, reducing the need for referrals outside the region.
All 16 children have been discharged and recovering well at home.
MTRH continues to strengthen pediatric surgical services through training, equipment upgrades, and continued collaboration with local and international health partners.
