Nandi Hills Sub-County Hospital to Dispose Of 6 Unclaimed Bodies

Nandi Hills Sub-County Hospital has issued a 14-day notice for the disposal of six bodies that remain unclaimed.

In a notice dated January 6, 2025, the hospital said that if the bodies remained unclaimed within the said period, they would be disposed of.

Nandi Hills Sub-County Hospital hereby notified the general public of six unclaimed bodies lying at the hospital’s mortuary,” read part of the notice.

Pursuant to the Public Health Act, CAP 242 and Public Health (Public Mortuaries) Rules, 1991, relatives are requested to identify and collect the bodies within 14 days from date heareof. Any deceased bodies not collected within this period will be disposed of as per the laws and regulations,” it added.

Plans to dispose of the bodies follow a Kapsabet court ruling that gave the hospital a green light.

The ruling was issued on December 27, 2024, by Kapsabet Chief Magistrate Kibet Sambu.

It is hereby ordered that the applicant be and is hereby allowed to inter the following six unclaimed bodies at Nandi Hill County Hospital Mortuary,” read part of the ruling.

The court also directed the hospital to issue a 14-day notice before the bodies were disposed of.

Identity of bodies Nandi Hill Hospital will dispose

According to court documents shared on the Nandi County Government Facebook page, of the six bodies, only one is marked as unknown.

Others are identified as John Kipkemboi who died at the Hospital on February 2, 2022, and Joseph Maritim and George Khartumbo (who died at Kapsabet County Referral Hospital on January 19, 2024, and December 2023 respectively and transferred to the facility).

Others are Esther Ekai and David Masalsal. They both died at the Kapsabet County Referral Hospital in 2023 before their bodies were moved to Nandi Hills Mortuary.

The unclaimed body is of a male individual who also died at the Kapsabet-based hospital.
