NOCK to Partner Counties in Nurturing More Talents

/

The National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) is planning to roll out partnerships with various devolved units across the country.

NOC-Kenya President Paul Tergat says the partnership is aimed at helping more talents that will in future fly the Kenyan flag at the global level.

Tergat made the revelations during the awarding ceremony for team Kenya that participated in the Birmingham Commonwealth Games earlier this year.

The ceremony was held in Eldoret town on Wednesday night.

Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii gives out at award during the ceremony.

We are entering partnership with different counties to see that we are able to tap talents in different sports so that we do not leave out another omanyalla and also to a mass more medals during such competition,” said the legendary Kenyan athlete.

The event was attended by outgoing Sports Cabinet Secretary Amb. Amina Mohamed who was the chief guest.

Run clean

In her remarks, Amb. Mohamed noted that the government had invested heavily in addressing the doping issue that has emerged as a threat to athletics in the country.

We had a plan to stop the menace from the perpetrators who were using athletes to gain money at the expense of the athlete. Doping is all about ecosystem,” she said.

The outgoing Sports CS also noted that they used a number of influencial athletes in pushing the ‘run clean’ agenda.

We pumped in money to the Anti-doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK) so that they conducted testing and we also approached athletes who we thought had influence to pass the agenda of clean sport,” she said.

Among the athletes that were feted at the gala awards included steeplechaser Jackline Chepkoech and sprinter Ferdinand Omanyala.

The duo received outstanding awards.

Chepkoech set a new commonwealth 3,000m record in women (9:15:19) while Omanyala won Kenya’s first gold in 100m race after 60 years.

Overall, Kenya won 21 medals that included 6 golds, five silvers and 10 bronze medals to be ranked 13th in the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Athletes that bagged Gold for the country were awarded cash prices of Ksh350,000 each while the Silver medalists received Ksh200,000.

Those that won bronze went home with Ksh100,000.

All that made it to team Kenya for the Commonwealth Games also received a token of appreciation.
