North Rift Clergy Call for Calm as Senate Begins Gachagua’s Impeachment Hearing

Religious leaders in the North Rift region have asked Kenyans to remain calm and united even as the Senate begins impeachment trial against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The leaders drawn from the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) and the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) however asked Senators to soberly handle the process.

In a media briefing in Eldoret City, the clergy further asked Kenyans to accept the outcome of the process.

Whatever the decision will be reached by the Senate, we should remain peaceful,” said NCCK Uasin Gishu chairman Watila Barasa.

Similar sentiments were made by SUPKEM North Rift chairperson Sheikh Abubakar Bini.

Bini expressed optimism that the debate in the Senate will be sober unlike what was witnessed in the National Assembly.

Our stand as the clergy is that as Senators debate Gachagua’s impeachment, let it be sober and avoid use of words that on normal day can’t be said before children,” the Muslim clergy said.

But we ask that whatever the decision the Senate will make should be for the sake of the nation and not political interest,” he added.

Meanwhile, the religious leaders said removal from office for the second in command should never have been a priority.

They said the country is facing many issues that MPs ought to have focused their energies on.

Kenyans are now interested in getting services they deserve from the government. We have many issues with the new university funding model, health insurance and capitation to schools – these are the things elected leaders should be addressed,” said NCCK Uasin Gishu chairperson.
