Elgeyo Marakwet County Signs MOU with Moi University, AMPATH for Point of Care Ultrasound Deployment

The County Government of Elgeyo Marakwet has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Moi University and AMPATH.

According to Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich, the MoU is on the deployment of Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) to all county healthcare facilities.

Rotich signed the MoU on behalf of the county while Moi University team was led by Dr. Jeremiah Laktabai.

All Elgeyo Marakwet County health facilities will now have Point of Care Ultrasounds.

The governor said Point of Care Ultrasound equipment which will be available to all health facilities in the county is AI-enabled.

It has revolutionized the diagnosis of Breast cancer, Lung cancer, obstetrics, and general organ assessments.

It offers real-time bedside diagnosis, bringing advanced imaging directly to the patient,” the governor said.

Already, 82 health facilities in Elgeyo Marakwet including all 20 model health centers have been equipped with the gadgets.

The remaining facilities will be equipped progressively,” the county boss said.

Meanwhile, the Elgeyo Marakwet Emergency/Dispatch Centre at the Iten County Referral Hospital is now operational.

Governor Rotich officially operationalised the centre on Thursday, April 16, 2026.

The emergency lines are: 0704282828 and 0709000430.

The centre will operate as a 24/7 coordination hub for emergency call management, real-time ambulance dispatch and improved communication between communities, ambulance teams as well as health facilities.

Through the Ambalansi App, the call centre can locate the nearest ambulance to the point of call,” the governor said.

Our ambulance services within the county will henceforth be free of charge,” he added.

The Elgeyo Marakwet Emergency/Dispatch Centre was set up by the county in partnership with the Emergency Medicine Kenya Foundation (EMKF).

But as the centre opens, the governor asked locals to misuse the emergency lines.

He also affirmed his commitment to continue transforming the Iten County Referral Hospital to make it a centre of medical excellence.
