MTRH Workers Issue Strike Notice Begining April 21

Health services at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret are set to be grounded after workers’ unions issued a strike notice.

The strike notice lapses on the midnight of Monday, April 20, 2026.

According to officials from all unions at MTRH, the strike follows what they described as chronic delays in remittance of statutory and other third party deductions.

Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentist Union (KMPDU) North Rift Chairperson Dr Darwin Ambuka told journalists at the hospital on Monday, April 13, 2026, that the situation has pushed most of their members into poverty.

None of our members can walk into a bank and get a loan because they have been blacklisted for failing to pay their loans. We are all poor,” Ambuka said.

He was accompanied by officials from other workers’ unions at the hospital.

From Tuesday, we will all stay at home and w want to let the management know that none of us will be available. They will need to call all workers once the issues raised have been resolved,” Ambuka.

The strike will involve all unions at the hospital including Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO) and the Kenya National Union of Nurses and Midwives.

In a separate strike notice from KUCO, they listed severe shortage of staff as one of the reasons their members will be going on strike.

The strike, if not averted will disrupt health services at the facility which is the second largest public hospital in the country after the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

MTRH offers referral services to locals from at least 23 counties and nearby countries including Uganda and South Sudan.
