Mobile money remains the equalizer in access to financial services across various demographics.

Safaricom Announces Planned M-Pesa System Maintenance

All M-Pesa services will be unavailable on Monday night, telecommunications giants Safaricom has announced.

In a notice on its social media pages, Safaricom said the services will not be available due to a planned system maintenance.

The maintenance, Safaricom said, is aimed at enhancing the mobile money platform.

We are constantly enhancing our services to provide our customers with more innovations and a better experience,” Safaricom said.

As part of these ongoing enhancements, we will be carrying out planned system maintenance on the evening of Monday 24th June 2024 from 1am to 1.30am,” it added.

During the maintenance, all M-Pesa services will be unavailable.

However, all other Safaricom services, including calls, data and SMS, will remain available.

Safaricom noted that the timing of the system maintenance “has been planned to result in the least inconvenience to our clients.”

We apologise for any inconvenience and that you for your patience,” the company said in the notice issued on Saturday night.

When was M-Pesa launched?

M-PESA is a mobile phone-based money transfer service, payments and micro-financing service, launched in 2007 by Vodafone and Safaricom, the largest mobile network operator in Kenya.

It has since expanded to Tanzania, Mozambique, DRC, Lesotho, Ghana, Egypt, Afghanistan, South Africa and Ethiopia.

M-PESA allows users to deposit, withdraw, transfer money, pay for goods and services (Lipa na M-Pesa) and access credit and savings, all with a mobile device.

As of March 2022, at least 30 million Kenyans were using the M-Pesa service.
