The Social Health Authority (SHA) has announced it will assume full responsibility for managing medical cover for officers in the National Police Service (NPS) and Kenya Prisons Service (KPS), effective April 1, 2026.

In a public notice dated March 30, 2026, SHA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr Mercy Mwangangi said the transition will take effect at midnight, immediately after the expiry of the current cover at 11:59 p.m. on March 31.

The new arrangement will also extend to eligible dependants of officers under the Public Officers Medical Scheme Fund.

SHA boss assured officers and their families that measures have been put in place to ensure continuity of healthcare services during the transition period.

The authority further clarified that patients already admitted in hospitals will continue receiving treatment without disruption under the new cover.

Where an officer or dependant is receiving treatment in a facility that is not contracted by SHA, appropriate arrangements will be made to facilitate transfer to a SHA-contracted facility for continuity of care,” SHA added.

To support the transition, SHA has established a nationwide support system, including designated liaison officers in all county offices and a dedicated hotline.

SHA has designated liaison officers in all County Offices and established a dedicated hotline, 0800 720 601, to handle enquiries,” the authority noted.

Additionally, the agency said it will share the list of liaison officers with relevant NPS and KPS offices to enhance coordination and communication during the rollout.
