Uasin Gishu MCAs Call For Drafting of Policy on Identification, Recognition of Heroes and Heroines

Members of the Uasin Gishu County Assembly have passed a motion calling for the establishment of policies on the identification and recognition of heroes and heroines.

In the motion moved by Tarakwa MCA Thomas Yego, the ward representatives note that despite sacrifices made by many personalities who have excelled in various fields, no adequate recognition has been made to them.

Yego while moving the motion said such personalities deserve recognition as a way of appreciating them for their contribution to the county, country and society.

Uasin Gishu has many personalities who have excelled in various fields like sports, community work and other areas of art…these personalities have brought fame, honour and respect to our County thus marketing and promoting our county to higher levels of recognition,” the MCA said in part of the motion.

Despite the sacrifices made by these heroes in uplifting the dignity of our country to national and international status, no adequate recognition has been made to them,” he added.

Mashujaa Day Celebrations

The County Assembly has now asked the executive through the Department of Education, Culture, Sports and Social Services to prepare a policy that will help in the identification of all deserving personalities, heroes and heroines in the county as well as recognizing them through awards.

The motion was passed just days before the celebration of Mashujaa Day, also known as Heroes’ Day – a national day which is observed on 20 October as a public holiday to collectively honour all those who contributed towards the struggle for Kenya’s independence or positively contributed in the post-independence Kenya.

It has been a tradition for the select heroes and heroines to be awarded by the President during the Mashujaa Day Celebrations.

Individuals to be awarded are usually recommended by the National Heroes Council whose mandate includes identification, selection and honouring of national heroes.
