Some of the health services across Uasin Gishu County have been disrupted after nurses down their tools.
The nurses offering services in all the over 138 health facilities run by the county started their strike on on August 8, 2025.
According to the Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) Uasin Gishu branch secretary Kevin Kimutai, the strike is meant to forced the county into implementing a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) which they finalised negotiating on in January 2025.
“The CBA was to be implemented by February but because of the delays, we have to go on strike,” Kimutai said.
He noted that the CBA had been negotiated for the last four years.
The nurses Union official further said they will only go back to work after the CBA is implemented.
He also accused the county of using delayed tactics on them.
“They keep telling us that they will implement the CBA but nothing has been forthcoming. It’s like they are using a delaying tactic,” Kimutai said.
He also revealed that there has been several meetings between them and the county leadership but so far, nothing has been agreed.
“They have called us for a meeting but we have not reached an agreement so the strike continues,” the KNUN Uasin Gishu branch secretary said.
Nurses play a key role in health facilities and their absence often disrupt efficient provision of services to patients seeking medical services.
The last time Uasin Gishu nurses went on strike was in December 2024. However, the strike lasted less than two weeks after they signed a return-to-work agreement on January 11, 2025.
