Uasin Gishu Peace Actor Urges Youth to Shun Destructive Demonstrations

By Naomi Cheruiyot

The youth have been called upon to practice peaceful demonstrations and avoid the destruction of property and loss of lives.

2022 Peace Prize holder and Chair of Peace Actors in Uasin Gishu, Mary Njoki, further encouraged young people to apply for national identification cards as a way to remove corrupt political leaders who promote impunity.

The only way to remove leaders who are corrupt is by voting them out during elections—and this can only be done when everyone has a national identification card,” said Njoki in Eldoret on Tuesday, August 12, 2025.

Njoki is championing peace in the country as the electioneering period approaches.

She noted that past elections have been marred by conflict.

The peace actor also urged the youth to embrace digital farming as a way to uplift their livelihoods, create jobs for themselves, and offer employment opportunities to others.

She further asked young people to distance themselves from actions that destroy their own country, urging them instead to focus on building a better future.

In addition, the Peace Prize holder encouraged parents to talk to their children to help change their attitudes and to guide them on appropriate ways to reach out to leaders when they have grievances that need addressing.

Meanwhile, Njoki stated that compensating those affected during past protests would not be a lasting solution, even though she acknowledged the president’s and government’s decision to do so.

Let the president compensate—it may cool down parents and relatives—but it will not bring back the lives lost. Personally, I do not want to see protests where people are killed in society,” she said.
