The Uasin Gishu County Rural Water and Sanitation Company (URWASCO), a rural water service provider, has initiated a comprehensive community sensitization program.
This initiative aims to inform and educate the local populace about the new services and changes in water and sanitation provision across the county’s rural and peri-urban areas.
When was Uasin Gishu Rural Water Company established?
URWASCO was officially established through an Act by the Uasin Gishu County Assembly, which came into effect on July 3, 2023, after being signed by Governor Dr. Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim.
The company was subsequently registered with the Registrar of Companies on February 15, 2024.
Its primary function is to oversee and manage water and sanitation services in the less urbanized regions of the county.

During the second day of the sensitization program at Kipkabus Center and Ngeria, Charles Tanui, the Managing Director of URWASCO, spoke on the significance of the initiative.
“We want to ensure that residents in rural areas have access to clean and sufficient water supply,” Tanui stated, highlighting Governor Bii’s vision for the community.
Why URWASCO is holding community sensitization
The sensitization campaign covered several key topics including the mandate of URWASCO: Clarifying the roles and responsibilities of the company, Water Charges: Discussing proposed tariffs and other associated fees, Agreement Forms: Explaining the necessary documentation for service provision, Registration of Consumers: Ensuring all users in each water scheme are registered and Connection and Metering: Details on how consumers will be connected and metered.
This program aligns with one of the key points of Governor Bii’s NGUZO 7 initiative, which aims at linking URWASCO with Eldoret Water and Sanitation Company (ELDOWAS) for enhanced distribution and management of water services. This collaboration is expected to streamline water provision, ensuring it reaches even the most remote areas effectively.

The community’s response to the sensitization has been positive, with many residents expressing enthusiasm about the prospect of improved water access as well as clarity on service charges and procedures.
URWASCO’s efforts are seen as a step forward in the county’s journey towards sustainable water and sanitation management, contributing to the overall health and well-being of its citizens.
