The County Government of Uasin Gishu is set to commission and operationalize a new asphalt processing plant in Eldoret City.
The plant is expected to improve efficiency in infrastructure development, reduce road construction costs by 50%, and produce more durable roads.
According to Uasin Gishu County Executive Committee Member for Roads, Abraham Serem, the plant is 90% complete.
It will support the county government’s initiative to tarmac several kilometers of roads in the municipalities of Cheramei, Moisbridge, Ziwa, Kesses, Moiben, and Burnt Forest. These areas will be the first to benefit.
Serem said the county’s goal is to boost trade, lower transport costs, and improve the maintenance of key inter-ward roads to spur economic growth.
The Roads Department has also achieved 52% completion on other ongoing projects. These are being delivered through framework contracts, collaboration with the National Youth Service (NYS), and in-house programs, with a target of completing 700 kilometers of roads.
The county’s CIDP 2023–2027 provides for the establishment of an asphalt plant to upgrade roads to bitumen standards.
This aligns with Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii’s manifesto under Pillar VI on Infrastructure Development and Public Works, which commits to upgrading and maintaining all county road networks to all-weather standards.
