The University of Eldoret and China’s Hainan University have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Student Exchange Agreement aimed at fostering academic and cultural cooperation.
The agreement was signed by Hainan University Vice-President, Qiu Xiguang, and University of Eldoret Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Thomas Cheruiyot, at a ceremony attended by representatives from both institutions.
During the event, Prof. Cheruiyot noted the importance of this partnership, highlighting that it is the first collaboration between the University of Eldoret and a Chinese university.

He expressed optimism about the opportunities this partnership would provide for students, faculty, and the larger academic community.
Vice-President Qiu echoed this sentiment, explaining that the MoU’s main objectives include facilitating student exchanges and promoting collaborative efforts in applied science, cultural programs, and joint workshops.
UoE-Hainan University MoU focus areas
The MoU will focus on three core areas: training and resource-sharing for students, advancing innovation in applied sciences, and fostering cultural exchange through workshops and cultural programs.
Both universities identified key research fields for collaboration, including agriculture, ecological conservation, material science, information technology, and tourism. Additionally, the institutions aim to address issues like poverty reduction, food security in tropical regions, and climate change.

The MoU signing was attended by prominent figures from Hainan University, including Prof. Xu Jianchu from the World Agroforestry Center and Miao Weiguo, Dean of the School of Tropical Agriculture and Forestry.
Meanwhile, the University of Eldoret’s delegation included Prof. Philip Raburu, Prof. Donald Otieno, and Dr. Edwine Yongo, an alumnus of Hainan University.
This MoU marks a significant step in strengthening academic ties between Kenya and China, fostering research collaboration, and enhancing cultural understanding through educational exchange.
