William Ruto Announces Plans to Dual Over 1,000 Kilometres of Major Highways

The Kenyan government has committed to dualling over 1,000 kilometres of major roads across the country in the coming few years.

President William Ruto said the move is part of his administration’s efforts to enhance infrastructure for economic development.

No economy can flourish without world-class infrastructure,” Ruto said during Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kitui county on October 20, 2025.

Which Kenyan highways will be dualled?

Among the major highways earmarked for dualling are the Eldoret-Malaba Road and Mombasa-Nairobi Highway.

The president, however, did not give timelines on when the projects would be completed.

We have committed to dual at least 1,000km of major highways, including the Rironi-Nakuru-Mau Summit-Eldoret-Malaba, Makutano-Embu-Meru, Kitengela-Namanga, Mombasa-Nairobi and Marua-Nanyuki-Isiolo roads, among others,” Ruto said.

He also revealed that his administration has committed to constructing at least 10,000 kilometres of new roads across the country.

The new roads, the President said, will help in linking counties, farmers, traders and manufacturers to markets across the nation.

In addition, the government will complete the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Naivasha to Kisumu and later Malaba, “seamlessly connecting Kenya to Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo”, the countries he noted lie at the heart of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
