A concern has been raised over high teenage pregnancies in Uasin Gishu County.
Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno says the high teenage pregnancy is a matter that needs to be addressed.
Speaking in a fund drive in aid of purchasing a plot at Happy Church Ministries – Munyaka, Chemno said Ainabkoi Sub County is among areas with high cases.
“In 4 years, we have 27,000 cases of teenage pregnancies in Uasin Gishu, if a single school has 400 children, how many schools are those?” the DG posed.
He called on the church to step in and help to address the challenge.
Data from Kenya Data and Health Survey (2014) show that 1 in every 5 girls between 15-19 years is either pregnant or already a mother. As of 2019 latest statistics from Global Childhood, Kenya has the third-highest teen pregnancy rate with 82 births per 1,000 births.
Chemno also assured Eldoret locals of the county’s commitment to providing them with sufficient water.
He revealed that plans are at an advanced stage for the construction of the Kipkorgot dam that will boost water supply to the town dwellers.
“We’re working on a dam in Kipkorgot that will give Eldoret 30 years of guaranteed supply of water,” Chemno noted.
