Adopting New Technologies to Reduce Collapsing of Buildings

Buildings collapse has been noted to be a common phenomenon in recent years. This has raised questions about the regulatory environment that guides structural building maintenance.

An assessment done by the National Construction Authority (NCA) that involved 14,895 buildings revealed that about 10,791 of the buildings were unsafe for occupation.

According to the report, 87 buildings have been recorded to have collapsed for the last five years. 66 percent of the buildings collapsed after completion while 34 percent collapsed during construction.

Three months barely pass without any case of collapsed structures. An average of 8 buildings collapses every year worldwide, resulting in 343 deaths/year.

Some of the reasons said to have contributed include poor workmanship, use of substandard materials, non-compliance to building strands and regulations, adequate structural design and overloading, and inadequate maintenance of structures

The digital landscape is evolving at a high rate as new inventions in the construction sector emerge. If you need to build a house, ensure to do the following things;

  • Adopt modern technologies to monitor aging buildings and ensure quality control during construction to avoid the high rates of building collapse.
  • Get a fully registered structural engineer who can offer proper structural design for your preferred building size and weight and construction methods at each stage and who can design stable functional buildings.
  • Get a professional architect who can offer professional advice on the appointment of other professional consultants such as electrical engineers, quantity surveys.
  • Get a very competent contractor who has all-risk insurance. Check the tools and equipment they are using. Get a preview of their past work.
  • Obey the laws on building construction in your geographical area. Adhere to the national building code.
  • Perform a soil test on where you want to build your house. Get a professional who will determine the bearing capacity of your soil and the weight the soil can withstand.
  • Get quality materials for the type of house you want to have. Do not buy cheap materials to avoid spending much money.
