Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago together with Devolution Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter, and European Union Deputy High Commissioner to Kenya Henriette Geiger on Friday led other Government officials in the official commissioning of Ksh.173 Million state-of-the-art Kimumu/Bahati fresh produce wholesale market.
The market in Kimumu Ward, Moiben Sub-County is expected to serve over 2,000 traders across the county.
Kimumu/Bahati fresh produce wholesale market which is fitted with 10 cold rooms for preservation and storage of products is among other six constructed and already operational markets that were designed with an intention of improving hygiene and general food handling.
According to Mandago, the state of the art Market will provide a linkage between producers, wholesalers, exporters, and over 60 retail markets in the County.
“It is fully equipped with cold storage facilities, an online Marketing portal to link traders with the international market, and offices to guide farmers and traders on export requirements through the Eldoret International Airport. Value addition for trade products will be introduced,” Mandago said.
The Market is set to stimulate and accelerate the economic potential of the region through improved households incomes and employment creation for hundreds of youths.
The County Government of Uasin Gishu recently adopted a market policy to ensure the sustainability of such facilities.
