Assembly Leadership Meet Uasin Gishu Committee of Eminent Persons, Pledge to Push Pro-Cohesion Legislations

The leadership of the Uasin Gishu County Assembly has committed to coming up with legislation that will help address issues that have been cited as a threat to peaceful coexistence in the county.

Led by Assembly Speaker Phillip Muigei, leader of the majority Julius Sang and Assembly Clerk, the leaders made the commitment during a meeting with the Uasin Gishu Committee of Eminent Persons in Eldoret on October 6, 2022.

Yassin Hassan, the coordinator of the committee says the meeting with the County Assembly leadership is part of a series of engagements meant to help address various issues.

The issues have come up during the Post-Electoral Actor Engagements they have been conducting.

They include historical and political.

In an interview with Uasin Gishu News, Yassin says the County Assembly will be a key partner in helping develop legislation to address some of the historical issues raised.

Issues that require legislation by county assembly touch on land and settlement which remain unresolved. They require some careful legislation instruments to be applied to ensure there is permanent cohesion and healing,” he said.

Other issues that require legislation include boundaries demarcation, distribution of resources as well as appointments to the county.

There is a need for the assembly to come up with a policy framework that would guide appointments to ensure fairness and taking care of the interests of all communities,” noted the Uasin Gishu Committee of Eminent person coordinator.

Capacity building

During the meeting, the Uasin Gishu County Assembly leadership also asked that the panel helps capacity-building Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) by proving them with technical support on sponsoring bills, policy formulation and the budget-making process.

The panel which consists of eminent persons from different groups in society was actively engaged in peace-building efforts before the August 9 general elections.

It engaged various groups, including political leaders who committed to preaching peace and unity before, during and after the election.

It is these engagements that Yassin says helped ensure the county remained peaceful.

With the election over, the Uasin Gishu Committee of Eminent Persons is now planning to further engage various stakeholders in the hope they will find a lasting solution to challenges that have in the past contributed to election-related violence.

Some of the targeted groups that the panel plans to engage include Members of Parliament, County Government officials, the National Lands Commission (NLC), the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), the media as well as the business community including Boda Boda operators.

This will help understand community issues that will culminate in a recommendation level to various actors,” Yassin said.
