Wamalwa Kijana Teaching and Referral Hospital has successfully sourced and installed a modern Solar Surgery System aimed at ensuring uninterrupted power supply during critical surgical procedures.
The hospital’s Medical Superintendent, Dr. Zaitun Aziz, said the move was necessitated by frequent power outages that have previously disrupted major surgeries and threatened patient lives.
“We have faced serious challenges with power outages occurring during operations,” Dr. Aziz said.

“These interruptions compromise both the quality of care and patient outcomes. Procuring the Solar Surgery System was therefore critical for us as a backup and reliable power solution,” she added.
The system, which includes solar panels and advanced battery storage, activates within seconds to keep surgical lights, monitors, and life-support machines running smoothly.
Officials described the installation as a major milestone that will improve care quality and serve as a model for other facilities in the region.

Wamalwa Kijana Teaching and Referral Hospital is the biggest public health facility in Trans Nzoia County.
It is located within Kitale Town.
