Athletics Kenya Backs AIU Suspension of Peres Jepchirchir, Reaffirms Anti-Doping Stance

Athletics Kenya (AK) has backed the decision by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) to provisionally suspend marathon star Peres Jepchirchir following an Adverse Analytical Finding, while reaffirming its commitment to the fight against doping.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, the federation acknowledged the development, describing it as unfortunate given the athlete’s profile, but maintained that safeguarding the integrity of the sport remains paramount.

“While it is unfortunate to receive such news regarding a high-profile athlete, Athletics Kenya remains firm in its stance on promoting clean sport and ensuring a level playing field for all competitors,” AK said.

The federation emphasised that the testing process and the decision to impose a mandatory provisional suspension were handled independently by the AIU, which acted in its role as the designated testing authority under international anti-doping regulations.

What AK said about Peres Jepchirchir’s suspension

Additionally, AK said the process was conducted in accordance with established anti-doping rules, international standards and lawful case management procedures.

The athletics governing body also threw its support behind the work of anti-doping agencies, including the AIU and the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK), saying their efforts are critical in protecting clean athletes and maintaining public trust in the sport.

It further reiterated its long-standing position against the use of prohibited substances, noting that it will continue investing in athlete education and stronger testing frameworks.

“We remain committed to educating athletes, strengthening testing frameworks, and ensuring that fairness and integrity remain at the heart of Kenyan athletics,” the federation stated.

What Peres Jepchirchir’s suspension means for the athlete

The provisional suspension means Jepchirchir will be unable to compete while the anti-doping case is being processed under the applicable regulations.

An Adverse Analytical Finding is reported when a prohibited substance or its markers are detected in an athlete’s sample, triggering further investigations and disciplinary procedures under anti-doping rules.

Jepchirchir is one of Kenya’s most decorated long-distance runners and has enjoyed considerable success on the global stage, including victories in major international marathons and representation of Kenya at elite competitions.

The latest development comes as Kenyan athletics continues to grapple with doping-related cases, prompting renewed efforts by local and international authorities to strengthen testing, enforcement and education programs aimed at protecting the country’s reputation in global athletics.
