Athletics Kenya Track and Field Weekend Meet Heads to Thika

After the cross country season, which ended with the Sirikwa Classic Cross Country Continental Tour on Saturday last week, athletes have now shifted focus on making team Kenya for the World Athletics championships in Tokyo, Japan (Road to Tokyo) later this year.

One such athlete is the national 100m and 200m champion Esther Mbagari. She is aiming to represent Kenya at the international level in this Athletic season.

My dream now is to represent my country at the World Championships, and the time is now. I will be focusing on my training so that I will be able to make the team,” said Mbagari as the busy 2025 started in Mumias.

The Kenya Prison officer said while it is still early in the stages of the season, her coach has good plans for the training going forward.

In Mumias, Mbagari finished second (12.3) behind winner Eunice Kadogo Murandafu, who timed 12.2 while her cousin Brenda Inziano Masitsa was third (12.4).

She will be hoping for an improvement as the Athletics Kenya (AK) Track and Field Weekend Meet heads to Thika.

In Thika, I want to perform well, trusting my preparation and training. I’m going to give good results,” said Mbagari, who won her favourite 200m in the Mumias complex stadium.

Her cousin Masitsa is also aiming to do well in Thika, coming off a knee injury she got last season.

I have just recovered from the injury I got, but by the time we are in Thika, I will have improved on blocks and claim victory in 200m,” she said.

The two-day event will see athletes compete in various track events and field at Thika Stadium.

On Thursday, February 27, 2025, athletes will pick up their bib numbers and undergo verification.
