South Africa is the continent’s most football-obsessed nation, a July 2026 report found.

As the World Cup took over screens and conversations worldwide, a new study by the football predictions platform The Daily Punt analyzed fan numbers, professional players, stadiums, and search activity to determine which nations live and breathe football the most.

  • South Africans searched for football-related topics 122 million times in a single month, far ahead of any other nation.
  • With 82 million supporters, Nigeria has the largest football fan base in Africa.
  • Algeria leads the way for club infrastructure, with 124 registered football clubs.

The study ranked African countries across key activity indicators. The number of football fans and searches for all football-related terms captured everyday engagement with the sport, while professional player counts and registered clubs reflected the strength of each nation’s football infrastructure.

Additionally, the study looked at how many stadiums each country has and how many fans they can hold.

1. South Africa

South Africa takes the top spot with a perfect score, driven by a massive following of 42 million supporters and more online searches than any other nation, over 122 million in just one month.

The country fields 541 professional players across 43 clubs, with stadiums spread from Johannesburg to Cape Town.

2. Nigeria

Nigeria’s football culture runs deeper than anywhere else in terms of pure numbers, with 82 million supporters and more registered professionals than any other country.

The nation’s 88 clubs always keep up the interest, and locals search for football matches and player info 75M times a month.

3. Algeria

Algeria brings 22 million supporters and 1,205 professional players to the table, with more clubs than any other country in the top ten. The nation’s 124 teams drive strong search interest, boosted by competitive domestic leagues and regular continental fixtures.

Matchdays draw crowds year-round, keeping the football conversation alive even between tournaments.

4. Kenya

Kenya’s 24 million fans produce the third-highest search activity in the entire ranking (62.8M queries monthly), showing just how engaged supporters are online.

The country counts 409 professional players and 36 clubs, with stadiums hosting everything from local derbies to regional competitions.

5. Ghana

Ghana’s 17 million supporters and 1,051 professional players place it among the continent’s football powerhouses.

The country operates 94 clubs and records strong search numbers, with the national team’s performances keeping fans engaged. From street kickabouts to packed stadiums, the sport remains woven into daily life.

Commenting on the study, a sports analyst from The Daily Punt said: “Every four years, the World Cup puts football front and centre, but what happens after the final whistle tells the real story.

The nations that stay engaged through domestic leagues, player development, and year-round conversation are the ones that deserve the title of football countries. The tournament is just the loudest part of a conversation that never really stops,”
