The registration of motorcycles being used as bodabodas in Uasin Gishu County has kicked off.
Uasin Gishu County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Trade Dr. Emily Kogos and Ainabkoi Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Charles Laboso presided over the launch of the exercise on Monday, March 28, 2022.
The 60-day nationwide exercise is targeting to have a database of all bodaboda operators across the country.
Speaking during the launch of the exercise at the Eldoret Huduma Centre Grounds, Dr. Kogos flanked by Uasin Gishu County Secretary Edwin Bett said the County Government of Uasin Gishu will continue championing the affairs of the sector for them to continue growing better.
She cited at least Ksh15 million that the county has loaned the industry alongside wooing them to various Saccos for ease of proper management, coordination, and traffic rules training as some of the initiatives that have been rolled out.
Ainabkoi DCC Charles Laboso on his part said the exercise also aims to have the sector lawfully recognized like other businesses.
Laboso challenged the bodaboda operators to work closely with both county and national government during and after the exercise.
The government is targeting to register at least 2.5 million bodaboda riders in the industry – in a move aimed at streamlining the transport sub-sector and promoting road safety and security for the operators and their customers.
“A registered bodaboda rider will be issued with a Smart Driving Licence within the period upon the processing of registration information,” said Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.
To register, a rider must present himself/herself in person and have an original ID card, a copy of the KRA PIN number, and an active registered phone number.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Interior, a notification will be sent to the registered mobile number upon processing the registration information.
