Uasin Gishu Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii has emphasized the paramount importance of the bodaboda industry to observe and comply with all traffic rules.

In a speech read on his behalf by the County Executive Committee Member for Trade and Cooperatives Martha Cheruto on Friday during the launch of training and licensing of over 1000 bodaboda riders by Kenya Roads Board (KRB), the county boss said his administration remains steadfast in its commitment to enhancing compliance and enforcement of wearing of safety gears with stage identifications and helmets.

The sector, according to Dr. Bii, prides meaningful employment to over 20,000 youth who aspire to make great strides in their economic development.

In terms of supporting the economic stability of the sector, the County Government implemented a reduction in the monthly sticker fees. This, operators within the CBD are now paying Ksh 400, down from Ksh 600, while those outside the town making a payment of  Ksh 200, reduced from Ksh 300.

The County administrator also urged those who have not joined the Saccos to ensure they do so to benefit from the county loans as well as follow suit and embrace digitization and automation of their entities as earlier done by Kibagenge bodaboda Sacco.

On his part, Isaac Mureithi who represented the Director General Kenya Roads Board said their mandate is to oversee the road network in Kenya and thereby coordinate its development, rehabilitation and maintenance urging the riders to observe all road measures and signages to promote road safety.

The areas of training include basic first aid and safety awareness, sensitization on alcohol and drug abuse, and screening of non-communicable diseases among others.

Uasin Gishu boda boda chairman Nahashon Kemei, Directors Sila Terigin (Governor’s Press) Musa Mutai (Protocol) Samuel Wambugu (Cooperative Audit) and Cooperatives Officer Shadrack Rotich were present.
