Transport stakeholders in Uasin Gishu County have initiated strategies to help improve the boda boda sector by enhancing safety for riders and passengers and reducing serious incidents.

Speaking on Thursday, July 2, 2026, during a stakeholders’ engagement that brought together representatives of the County Government of Uasin Gishu, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), and senior police officers, participants emphasised the need to streamline the Boda Boda Sector to enhance order and overall safety.

The meeting was chaired by Moiben Deputy County Commissioner Duncan Okwach, who was representing the Uasin Gishu County Commissioner, Dr Eddyson Nyale.

The Uasin Gishu County Roads CECM Abraham Serem advised on the importance of every boda boda operator being registered through SACCOs and using a digital system to identify genuine boda boda operators, in addition to providing regular training for them.

Governor Jonathan Bii has been at the forefront in supporting the boda boda sector. He recently held a meeting with them. We want to ensure this sector becomes better,” CECM Serem said.

The strategies also aim to reduce crime, enhance accountability, prevent criminals from posing as boda boda riders, and ensure that boda boda riders receive appropriate support from the county.

The meeting was also attended by Samuel Mwangi from NTSA, who gave training on a proposed government App system to be used to improve the sector.

However, there were concerns from participants over reports of some boda boda riders defying traffic lights in Eldoret City, some being linked to crime, and not using the designated parking areas.

Others in attendance were Eldoret City Municipality Manager Elzeba Busienei, Chief Officers Geoffrey Tanui (Roads)and Elphas Kesio (Cooperatives), and Uasin Gishu Director of Transport Lazarus Sile.
