Plans by the national government to construct an ultra-modern market in Eldoret town have now moved into a new phase.
This is after the county government of Uasin Gishu on Friday, February 17, 2023, concluded public participation forums across all the six sub counties.
The forums that were held for the last three days were aimed at collecting views from members of the public concerning the project.
It is a legal requirement that any project being undertaken by either the national or county government be subjected to public participation.
During the last day of the forums, some of the traders that were operating at the closed Eldoret Champions Market had an opportunity to give their views on what the new project should consider.
Already, it has been agreed that the multi-storey building be set up at the closed market.
Mark Anthony Otwane, the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) Uasin Gishu branch Chief Executive Officer (CEO) also presented a memorandum for the eldoret business community.
Accesibility, parking
Among the areas KNCCI wants the multi-billion project to consider is ensuing it is accessible with elaborate parking space and other key social amenities.
“We’re going green nd we refer that solar energy be considered. We have also roosed that business persons who were operating at this market be given priority once the project is complete,” Otwane said.
He further called for the hastening of the project to ensure it benefits the intended persons as soon as possible.
The government plans to build the new market on a 3.25 are piece of land located within the Eldoret town centre where the Champions and Sixty Four Retail markets are currently situated.
The market is expected to host more than 10,000 traders.
Further, it will have installations for cooling and packaging to enable value addition to the fresh vegetables and fruits.
Among the proposed design for the market is having two levels of underground parking areas with farmers, traders and motorists among the direct beneficieries of the projet.
It is estimated Ksh6 billion will be invested in the project that was initiated following a rise in concentration of street hawking activities on busy intersections, around markets and major transport roads in Eldoret town.
“The heavy influx of traders have piled pressure on market facilities subjecting traders to conditions that are insecure and unsanitary,” read part of a county document seen by Uasin Gishu News.
With public participation phase now concluded, design works for the project are now expected to be finalized, based on views from locals.
