Eldoret Clergy Calls for Dialogue Amid Gen Z’s Protests Over 2024 Finance Bill

As Gen-Z group of protesters vows to hold more demonstrations against the controversial 2024 Finance Bill that has introduced a number of unpopular tax proposals, a section of Eldoret religious leaders has asked politicians to embrace dialogue over the issue.

Speaking at Hallelujah Church in Eldoret during a joint sunday service for several churches from Rift Valley and Western Kenya, Bishop Dr. Zablon Malema urged the politicians to listen to the issues being raised which have caused palpable anger among many Kenyans.

As a church we understand the hardship faced by Kenyans and especially the unemployed youth,we urge politicians to listen to the concerns being raised such as escalating cost of living through a meaningful dialogue and resolve those issues peacefully without any conflict or violence that leads to loss of life,” Bishop Malema said.

He also asked the police not to use excessive force while trying to contain the protests.

Bishop Malema: Don’t be hostile to Gen Z’s

In addition, the clergy challenged political leaders to stop using hostile rhetoric and threats against the Gen Z protesters which he said heightens more tension and anger.

It’s unfortunate that lives were lost during the Gen Zs protests. I would like to urge the police to adhere to the principles of necessity and proportionality in responding to any violence during the demonstrations because the Gen -Z are our future which should be protected and guided,” Bishop Malema explained.

He, however, appealed to the Gen Zs to maintain peace and order during the demonstrations and avoid destruction of property or violence.

Last week, hundreds of young people took to the streets in major towns protesting against the 2024 Finance Biil.
