Eldoret: Concerns Raised over Slow Pace of Construction Works for 64 Ultra-Modern Market

A team of engineers from the State Department of Housing and Urban Development has raised concerns over the pace in which works on 64 ultra-modern market in Eldoret is taking.

Accompanied by the Uasin Gishu Trade Department team led by Trade Director Isaac Lagat, the engineers visited the market to assess its progress on Friday, January 31, 2025.

During the inspection, the delegation expressed concern over the slow pace of construction.

They urged the contractor to expedite the work to ensure timely completion.

It has been a year since this project was launched by the President and county leadership. Traders are eager to use it, and we cannot afford further delays,” said Eng. Silas Nyambok, the Project Manager Representative (PMR).

Significance of 64 market in Eldoret

Establishment of the 64 ultra-modern Market is a significant milestone for economic growth and job creation, providing employment opportunities for hundreds of young people across the county.

The market, once complete, is expected to address a challenge of lack of space for traders to operate from

The project is being implemented jointly by the National Government and the County Government of Uasin Gishu at a tune if Ksh 6 billion.

It was initiated after a request by Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim to President William Ruto.

Ealier this week, Uasin Gishu County Executive Committee Member for Trade Martha Cheruto flanked by Eng. Benjamin.K. Njenga, Secretary for Urban and Metropolitan Development in the State Department for Housing and Urban Development as well as Trade Chief Officer Nathan Korir checked on the construction progress of 64 modern market.

We are confident that the project is going to be completed within the shortest time so that our people can begin utilizing i,” noted Cheruto

The eight-storeyed iconic market upon completion is expected to accommodate at least 4,000 traders.
