Uasin Gishu Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii Chelilim has nominated Dr. Philip Kiprotich Chebunet as the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Trade, Industrialization, Tourism, Cooperatives, and Enterprise Development.
Chebunet’s nomination is subject to approval by the Uasin Gihsu County Assembly.
In a formal media release issued Tuesday, March 31, 2026, by the director of governor press Sila Koskei, governor Bii described Dr. Chebunet as “a distinguished scholar and public policy professional with over two decades of experience in leadership, governance, and strategic communication.”
The statement also highlighted his academic credentials: a PhD in Communication Studies from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, a Master of Philosophy in Communication Studies, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Relations from Moi University. His expertise is further enhanced by certifications in mediation and public speaking.
“Having served in academia and administration, Dr. Chebunet brings proven skills in governance, policy formulation, and strategic leadership, as well as extensive experience in enterprise development, entrepreneurship, and trade,” read part of the release seen by Uasin Gishu News.
Dr. Chebunet’s nomination comes as Uasin Gishu seeks to revitalize its economic sectors, particularly trade and tourism, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
His appointment, if approved, would place him at the helm of key economic portfolios critical to the county’s growth agenda.
When did Uasin Gishu Trade CeCM resign?
He will take over from Eng Martha Cheruto who reportedly resigned.
A source at the County Government of Uasin Gishu told Uasin Gishu News that Eng Cheruto resigned in January 2026 before moving to the United States of America.
The nomination will now be forwarded to the County Assembly for vetting and confirmation.
Dr Chebunet is currently a lecturer at the University of Eldoret. He is also among the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) officials at the university.
