The newly constituted Moi University Council has sent Vice Chancellor Prof Isaac Kosgey on an 8-month compulsory leave.
The council, in a letter to the VC, seen by Uasin Gishu News, indicates that the decision was unanimously agreed upon.
Why Prof Isaac Kosgey has been asked to go on leave?
According to the council chairperson Prof Noah Midamba, the VC had not utilised any of his leave days since he assumed office.
“It has come to the notice of the University Council that you have accumulated substantial number of leave days equivalent to eight months,” read part of the letter to the VC dated January 30, 2025.
The Council noted that the Head of Public Service had already disallowed government officers from cashing in on unspent leave, hence exposing the university to potential audit queries.
In addition, the Moi University Council noted that the leave will allow the VC to rest and rejuvenation.
“Based on the above, the University Council has unanimously resolved in its meeting held on January 30, 2025, that you proceed on 8 months leave and utilise all your accumulated leave days with effect from the date of this letter,” Council chair Prof Midamba said.
Reports indicates that several Deputy Vice Chancellors (DVCs) at the University have also been asked to proceed on leave.
The Council has since named Prof Kiplagat Kotut the acting VC, with the Ministry of Education likely to name a new substantive person to take up the role in part of ongoing efforts to address issues the university has been facing.
When was Prof Kosgey appointed Moi Universty VC?
Prof Isaac Kosgey has been Moi University VC since 2018 when he was controversially appointed to replace Prof Richard Mibey who served for 10 years.
Ministry of Education’s decision to appoint Prof Laban Ayiro acting VC sparked protests from local leaders, some who claimed there was a plot to confirm him to the role.
It’s claimed Prof Kosgey emerged top in interviews while Prof Ayiro was second.
