The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has enhanced efforts to curb increasing cases of road accidents.
On Saturday, the agency in partnership with several other institutions held a series of activities that brought together at least 300 drivers.
In the event held at the Eldoret National Polytechnic was aimed to educate drivers, passengers, and pedestrians on safety measures.
“Road accidents are preventable if we unite; so we must engage all road users to help stem these tragic losses,” said Dr. Andrew Kiplagat, the NTSA Director of Road Safety.
The initiative, supported by NTSA and medical partners also highlighted the legal requirement for drivers to be medically fit.
Dr Kiplagat noted that a healthy driver is a safer driver.
He also stressed the need for more sensitization among road users.
John Chepkwony, Head of Automotive and Mechanical Engineering at Eldoret National Polytechnic who doubles up as the chairperson of Road Safety Mainstreaming, echoed these sentiments.
“Over 300 drivers benefited from medical check-ups courtesy of our partnership with NTSA and local hospitals like MTRH,” Chepkwony said.
The event not only promoted immediate medical care but also emphasized proactive measures.
“We ensure the roads around the polytechnic are well-maintained to instill a culture of safety awareness,” he noted.
Eldoret National Polytechnic plays a pivotal role in shaping future road safety ambassadors.
It offers courses in automotive engineering and vehicle management, aimed at producing skilled professionals for the transport sector.
“We’re not just educating; we’re molding leaders in road safety,” Chepkwony affirmed.
