Challenges to access to public toilets within Eldoret town will now be a thing of the past.
This is after the Eldoret Water and Sanitation Company (ELDOWAS) partnered with Fresh Life to install 20 toilets for public use around the Trocadero bus stage.
Fresh Life has also set up the toilets within Langas estate on the outskirts of Eldoret town.
According to Eldowas Managing Director Peter Biwott, the partnership is part of an initiative that seeks to ensure locals and businesspersons have an easy time accessing toilets.
“We want our citizens from rural areas when they come to stage here in town, they don’t have a hard time finding a toilet because they cannot enter a toilet,” Biwott said.
There has been a challenge over access to toilets within Eldoret town, with some of the locals having to access them at hotels and restaurants.
However, this is about to change with the Eldowas also planning to increase the number of public toilets across the town to at least 5,000 within the next few years.
Safe waste collection
Further, most of the toilets will be installed along the Sosiani River.
“We are bringing public toilets and we will install them along that River which will be our botanic garden in the near future so that residents can enjoy their stay in town,” notes the Eldowas MD.
Aside from access to toilets for locals, the company says it will be able to collect the solid wastes which are used in developing compost manure for organic farming.
Eldowas offers both water supply and sewerage services to customers within the Eldoret Municipality.
“We collect the solid waste for other use. The solid waste is not a waste, it can be used to develop compost manure which is healthy in growing organic food in our urban centres,” Biwott said.
“Our target is to have over 5,000 toilets in the next 10 years which means will create employment to over 10,000 locals,” he added.
Fresh Life is a Kenya-based social enterprise that works to make safely managed sanitation in low-income urban communities accessible and affordable.
It won the 2022 Global Challenges Canada’s third annual Rotman Innovation of the Year Award.
