The Eldoret Water and Sanitation Company (ELDOWAS) has raised concerns over the misuse of flash toilets by some of the locals within Eldoret town.
Eldowas Managing Director Peter Kibet says some of the locals have been throwing pampers and other solids which have ended up affecting the waste water dams.
With the financial implications of having such materials in the sewerage systems, Kibet says the company has rolled out a program that seeks to sensitize members of the public on the proper use of flush toilets.

“We are having a challenge of pampers and solids entering our sewer lines and it is compromising the quality of our wastewater dams,” said the Eldowas MD.
“For this reason, we are going to sensitize our clients on how to use flash toilets,” he added.
Kibet further points out that there is a need for members of the public, especially those connected to the sewerage system to be educated to know that when using flush toilets, only some kinds of tissue paper need to be used.
“Don’t throw pampers, solids or things like vegetables in the flush toilets. It hurts the sewerage and makes it expensive to treat the wastewater,” he noted.
Aside from the production and supply of water to locals within the Eldoret Municipality, the company also offers sewerage services.

The ELDOWAS boss says currently, the sewerage coverage within the municipality is at 40 per cent.
However, he notes that if they connect all the illegal connections to the system, the coverage is likely to reach 50 per cent.
“There are another 47 kilometres of a sewer being done by the government that will take us to about 65 per cent,” noted Kibet.
