FLLoCA Projects: Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Launches Drainage System Construction in Kimumu

Uasin Gishu County Deputy Governor Evans Kapkea has officially launched the construction of a drainage system in Kimumu, a project under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action Program(FLLoCA) program.

The project will include the construction of a closed drain channel, the installation of culverts, and the improvement of the open drainage channel in the area.

In his speech at the site, Deputy Governor Kapkea emphasized the project’s urgency as the rainy season approaches, stressing that the works must begin immediately to ensure completion before the rains arrive.

We have a 120-day timeline for this project, but I am confident it will be delivered within 90 days,” said Kapkea. “We cannot afford to be caught unprepared when the rains arrive.”

The Deputy Governor highlighted the importance of professionalism in executing the project, ensuring that the quality of the work is maintained throughout. “We have selected a contractor with the capacity to handle this work, and we expect no mishaps in the technical aspects,” he added.

In addition, the deputy county boss emphasized the need to involve local youth in the project, specifically through casual contracts.

Our youth should be the biggest beneficiaries of this project. We are committed to providing employment opportunities for them throughout the works,” he said.

Use of local materials in FLLoCA projects

Meanwhile, Kapkea encouraged the use of local materials for the project, ensuring that local suppliers benefit from the initiative. “We want to ensure that the community as a whole benefits from this project, and sourcing materials locally will contribute to that,” he stated.

The launch event was also attended by Deputy Speaker Sarah Malel, who noted that Kimumu is set to benefit the most from the FLLoCA program.

Kimumu is the biggest gainer of FLLoCA, and this drainage system will make a significant impact on the lives of residents,” Malel said.

The project is supported by a budget allocation of Ksh 11 million which has been prioritized under Govenor Jonathan Bii’s Nguzo number 7.  The smooth collaboration between the executive and the County Assembly was also noted, with both parties working together to ensure the successful implementation of this much-needed infrastructure.

With the launch of the project, residents of Kimumu can now look forward to a more efficient drainage system that will address the challenges of flooding and improve overall sanitation in the area.
